POSTCARD CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN AUSTRALIAN AND MONGOLIAN WOMEN

Gallery ARC Yinnar - January 15 to January 30

This project was organised and curated by Janine Brophy-Dixon through Gallery Arc Yinnar.

I participated by creating a postcard that was then sent to a Mongolian Woman artist who then replied to me with her postcard. The postcards by Australian and Mongolian Women were exhibited together at ARC Yinnar along with Videos made by Janine Brophy-Dixon about her trip to Mongolia.

I wanted to send an image that I thought a Mongolian person would relate to but that also told them something about Australia.

I decided on an image of one of our horses that was on edge because of strong northerly winds and nearby bushfires.

The postcard from the Mongolian artist was also featuring horses and showed the Summer lifestyle of Mongolian people. It’s a beautiful piece of miniature painting on a postcard-sized canvas. This was something I learned about Mongolian art. Because people are still mostly nomadic, an artist can only carry limited materials so they mostly paint miniatures.

A very satisfying and educational project, thank you Janine Brophy-Dixon!
