Pony Ride

Charcoal pastel & acrylic on paper, 82x102cm

Selected as Finalist  4th arc Yinnar Biennial Drawing Prize 2012

Statement: In Pony Ride the artist is making reference to the state of rapture encountered by performer or artist ‘in the zone’ of creativity. The galloping skeletal horse was the actual backdrop for the guitarist, Andy Brown from band ShyRobyn at PONY nightclub in Melbourne but also acts here to anchor the three positions of the performer, to imply motion. The skeletal horse appears previously in Australian imagery, with implied connotations of living on the edge of society i.e. Sidney Nolan used similar iconography in his Kelly series and Nick Cave’s 80’s post-punk band The Birthday Party used it on posters. The artist was inspired to do this drawing after seeing the William Kentridge charcoal animations at ACMI in Melbourne in January 2012.
